Probate & Juvenile Courts: An Overview
Over the next several weeks, I want to do something a little different: walk through what Wood County’s Probate and Juvenile Courts actually do.
I have practiced in these courts for over 25 years, and the question I hear most often on the campaign trail is some version of “what does this judge even handle?” It’s a fair question because these court’s dockets might be the widest-ranging in the entire court system. In one week, the same judge might finalize an adoption, appoint a guardian for someone with dementia, rule on a child’s lawsuit settlement, and decide whether a teenager goes home or into detention.
In Ohio’s larger counties, juvenile and probate are two separate judges. In Wood County, like in most of Ohio’s less populated counties, they are combined into one. That means whoever sits on this bench needs real, practical experience across an enormous range of family and legal issues.
So over the coming posts, I’ll walk through different pieces: guardianships, adoptions, estates, custody cases, juvenile cases, and more. My hope is that by November, every Wood County voter understands exactly what’s at stake in this race and why I believe over 25 years of experience in these courtrooms matters.
